Engagements and hands on experience are ways to make
the learners get acquainted with new learning in a better manner. Through the
transdisciplinary theme of How the World Works, PYP 3 is inquiring into how
materials change to create a final product. We spent a day conducting several
experiments during our finding out inquiry phase, to better understand
properties of the three main phases of matter: solids, liquids and gases. We
then applied our understanding of matter by creating a substance new to us. Learners had great fun while performing
various experiments. They were great inquirers while observing the balancing
stick weighing the different types of balloons. This helped them conclude that
every matter has weight; Air occupies space and has weight. They also felt that
the more amount of air the weight of that balloon was more than the smaller or
deflated balloon. They also saw a candle getting extinguished when a glass is
covered it, paper turning into ash when burnt etc. Learners were seen
thoroughly enjoying the activity.
